But, Jesus Gives Freedom!
Today, in Pakistan, more than 1,000,000 Christians live as indentured servants (slaves).
This happens when a person working as a farm laborer, brickmaker, or any other job has a financial shortfall, typically due to an illness or injury, and asks to borrow from their employer. Heavy interest is charged and, within weeks or months, grows to an insurmountable amount, and the entire family begins to work to pay off the loan, but the loan is already too large. The only inheritance a child receives is the debt that their parents incurred.
As seen in these pictures, slaves are often chained to heavy weights during the day and incarcerated at night.
There is no golden key or simple answer. It is complicated, and multiple organizations are working together to find answers. Together, we are committed to doing everything we can to help as many as possible.
As we work in multiple areas of the country, we find different things work in some regions rather than in others. In one region, we have found a wonderful woman who spent more than ten years in slavery and now has committed her life to seeing thousands of others freed. She has a unique approach, and we want to do all we can to encourage and support her efforts. However, we also work in other areas where her approach does not work. In those areas, it may cost 5 to 10 times more to redeem the debt.
And what happens when they are freed?
That’s when the real work begins.
The first step is to take the person out of slavery, but the second step is to bring the slavery out of the person. We believe that happens when we are surrounded by a community of others who know Jesus and have experienced the freedom that Jesus gives.
Often, the family will return to a safe place with other family members, but we also work hard to create a safe place for them within areas where we have thriving church communities. Here, they will be cared for by people who will genuinely love them. People who will help them get on their feet find work and help them avoid falling back into debt.
Thank you for giving the gift of freedom!
